Before rushing to the comments section, take a moment to read the article.

It’s understandable; you saw the headline and thought, “This sounds like a foolish idea.”

At first glance, I might agree with you, but stay with me here.

First and foremost, this proposal is built on the assumption that Ryan Poles will have a rookie quarterback with the team in 2024. If you firmly believe that Justin Fields will remain the team’s quarterback next season, then the premise of this article doesn’t hold.

However, if you align with the growing sentiment, now seemingly the majority among fans and media, that Fields will not stay in Chicago, and a rookie quarterback will take his place, then continue reading.

The second part of this article takes into consideration Brad Biggs’ reporting, where he mentioned in a recent column that he believes Matt Eberflus is on a 4-year deal, deviating from the more common 5-year contracts that most head coaches receive nowadays.

So, if you trust Biggs and share the belief that a rookie quarterback will be in the mix, then you essentially agree with me, even if you haven’t acknowledged it yet. Matt Eberflus should be granted an extension at the earliest opportunity.

Let me be clear; I’m not advocating for a lengthy three or four-year addition to his contract, just a one-year extension. Extend Matt Eberflus for one more year, and let’s do it this year. Now, let’s delve into the reasoning behind this suggestion.

Eberflus is about to enter the third year of his four-year contract. Teams typically prefer not to let their coaches enter the final year of their contract, so the ideal time to discuss an extension would be when there is one year remaining on his deal after the 2024 season.
