Are the Washington Commanders positioning themselves to acquire Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft? The USC standout appeared to show support for the Commanders’ decision to hire Kliff Kingsbury as their new offensive coordinator, expressing congratulations to the former Trojans assistant coach on social media.

Washington officially confirmed Kingsbury’s hiring on Monday morning following reports over the weekend suggesting a change in his expected return to the NFL. Initially slated to join the Las Vegas Raiders as offensive coordinator, Kingsbury withdrew his candidacy on Saturday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With Kingsbury now part of the Commanders coaching staff, speculation arises regarding a potential significant trade at the top of the 2024 NFL Draft, potentially involving Washington moving up to select Williams. This move could reunite the former USC duo, considering Washington holds the No. 2 overall pick and could potentially negotiate a trade with the Chicago Bears.

Kingsbury and Williams collaborated for one season at USC, where head coach Lincoln Riley brought Kingsbury in as a senior offensive analyst for the 2023 season. During that year, the Trojans ranked third nationally in scoring offense, averaging 41.8 points per game, a slight improvement from the previous season when Williams claimed the Heisman Trophy.

While Williams experienced a slight dip in overall performance as a junior in the recent season, he still managed to complete 68.6% of his passes for 3,633 yards and 30 touchdowns, with only five interceptions. Additionally, he contributed 136 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 97 carries for USC, which ended the regular season with a 7-5 record.

Prior to his role at USC, Kingsbury served as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals for four seasons until his dismissal in January 2023. Following his departure, he explored various NFL opportunities, including interviewing with the Chicago Bears for their vacant offensive coordinator position.
