The Bills’ cornerback, with a $69 million contract, is being considered as a possible candidate for release this offseason.

As the new season’s official start looms, the Buffalo Bills find themselves nearly $50 million below the salary cap, prompting speculation from insiders about potential roster changes. The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia has proposed that cornerback Tre’Davious White, the first pick of the Sean McDermott era, could be a casualty as the team seeks to trim its payroll. White has endured significant injuries, including a torn ACL in 2021 and a subsequent torn Achilles in 2023, raising questions about his future with the team.

Buscaglia observed that the Bills could significantly increase their salary cap flexibility at the start of the new league year by releasing White.

The decision ahead for Brandon Beane is described as “complex.”

Buscaglia outlined that while cutting White would provide a savings of slightly over $6 million in cap space, he also emphasized that “the situation could unfold in multiple ways and involves more than just financial considerations.” Beane, the general manager, would have to assess whether White can still perform at a high level following two major injuries, according to Buscaglia. However, time may be limited for Beane to make a final determination.

Buscaglia mentioned, “The team values the player highly and prioritizes White’s recovery before reaching a conclusion.” However, there might be a time constraint for White to regain his health before his $1.5 million roster bonus becomes due shortly after the start of the new league year, which could reduce their potential savings by 25 percent.
