Novak Djokovic has achieved a remarkable statistical milestone involving his longtime rival Rafael Nadal, as he extends his record for the most weeks at world No. 1. The early exit of world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the opening round of the Rio Open due to injury ensures that Djokovic will maintain his ATP world No. 1 ranking until at least April 1.

This extension will see Djokovic’s extraordinary tally of weeks spent atop the rankings reach 418 weeks, further widening the gap between him and his competitors in this category.

The total of 418 weeks is exactly double the number of weeks Nadal has held the world No. 1 position, with the Spanish star having occupied it for 209 weeks. Djokovic’s ability to establish such a significant lead over his rival, whom he has often referred to as his greatest competitor, is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the 36-year-old’s unparalleled dominance.

Roger Federer, another prominent rival of Djokovic, holds the second position for the most weeks at No. 1 with 310, followed by Pete Sampras in third place with 286.

Djokovic currently holds the men’s record for Grand Slam titles, having won 24, while Nadal and Federer trail behind with 22 and 20 titles respectively.

At the French Open last year, Djokovic reflected on his rivalry with Nadal, who was absent from the tournament for the first time since 2004 due to a hip injury. In a press conference, Djokovic remarked, “Many people had already written him off 10 years ago, but he persevered, which I deeply respect and admire. I understand how challenging it is to maintain such a high level and continue despite facing serious injuries.”

Acknowledging Nadal as his greatest rival, Djokovic expressed his sentiments upon hearing about Nadal’s decision to retire after the 2024 season. He stated, “When he announced that 2024 would be his final season, I felt like a part of me was also retiring with him. He has been one of the most influential figures in my career and has greatly contributed to my growth as a player.”
