The Cleveland Browns are gearing up to be contenders for an extended period, but they are confronted with challenging financial decisions in the upcoming two offseasons.

According to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, the team is expected to part ways with two-time All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin and may approach running back Nick Chubb to consider a reduction in his salary. Barnwell highlights the impending free agency of key players like Amari Cooper, Jedrick Wills, cornerback Greg Newsome, and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah after the next season. Additionally, the Browns’ trade for Deshaun Watson has resulted in a loss of significant draft capital.

The team may need to explore free agency to replace departing players, and potential moves like cutting Conklin and adjusting Chubb’s salary could be essential for managing their financial situation.

Nick Chubb faced a season-ending knee injury shortly after Jack Conklin, necessitating two surgeries for recovery. Despite Chubb’s consistent elite-level performance and four consecutive Pro-Bowl selections, he is not immune to the financial challenges confronting the Cleveland Browns.

Currently operating under a three-year, $36.6 million extension that concludes after the 2024 season, the 28-year-old running back will need to navigate the financial landscape. Comparable instances, such as Joe Mixon’s $3 million pay cut to stay with the Bengals and Aaron Jones sacrificing $5 million to stay with the Packers, highlight the financial decisions that players may encounter.

Should Nick Chubb be unwilling to entertain a reduction in pay, the Cleveland Browns have a contingency plan in Jerome Ford. In his second year, Ford demonstrated his capabilities by amassing 813 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns, coupled with 44 receptions for 319 yards and 5 touchdowns, according to Pro Football Reference.
