Cody Bellinger has signed a three-year contract worth $80 million with the Cubs.

Centerfielder Cody Bellinger is no longer a free agent, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Passan reports that Bellinger will be rejoining the Chicago Cubs after agreeing to a three-year, $80 million contract with the team.

Passan states that Bellinger’s contract includes opt-out clauses in the initial two years, granting him the option to enter free agency once more if he desires. Bellinger is slated to earn $30 million each in 2024 and 2025, with the final year of the agreement carrying a $20 million salary.

After experiencing a downturn in the 2022 season and subsequently parting ways with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bellinger signed a one-year contract with the Cubs. He underwent a resurgence in performance, achieving a career-high batting average of .307 and contributing 20 home runs, 97 RBIs, and a personal best of 20 stolen bases across 130 games. Recognized for his remarkable comeback, Bellinger garnered votes for the NL MVP award and was honored as the NL Comeback Player of the Year at season’s end.

Despite being regarded as one of the top free agents during the winter, Bellinger’s market failed to materialize as expected by him and his agent, Scott Boras. Teams reportedly approached his signing cautiously due to his prior performance fluctuations. Faced with limited appealing offers, Bellinger opted for a more flexible contract with the Cubs.

Having spent the initial six years of his MLB career with the Dodgers, Bellinger boasts two All-Star selections and earned the NL MVP accolade in 2019. Hailing from Scottsdale, Arizona, he also secured a World Series victory with the Dodgers in 2020.
