With the increasing frequency of player movement in the NBA, the tradition of retiring jerseys may become less common. In an era marked by player empowerment, athletes are often teaming up with one another and departing from teams in pursuit of success elsewhere.

Kyrie Irving is emblematic of this trend, having played for multiple franchises throughout his 13-year professional career. The Dallas Mavericks acquired Irving from the Brooklyn Nets prior to the 2023 NBA Trade Deadline, making them the fourth team he has represented in the league.

Irving experienced his second career trade when the Cleveland Cavaliers dealt him to the Boston Celtics, with Irving himself pushing for both moves in search of a change.

Such trade requests can sometimes strain the relationship between a player and a franchise. This was evident in how Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert reacted to LeBron James’ departure in free agency to the Miami Heat, and Irving likely also left behind some unresolved issues when he exited Cleveland.

Nevertheless, current NBA star Donovan Mitchell believes that despite any past tensions, the Cavaliers should honor Irving by retiring his No. 2 jersey. Mitchell expressed this sentiment following his team’s practice on Tuesday night as they geared up to host Irving and the Mavericks.

Mitchell stated, “He should undoubtedly have his jersey retired. Irving’s consistent high-level performance, transitioning from a team that struggled to achieve success to impacting the game on the highest stage, is truly commendable. Moreover, his contributions in the playoffs and bringing a championship to Cleveland exemplify his significance to the team and the city. In my opinion, along with Kevin Love and LeBron James, Irving deserves to have his jersey retired.”
