The Cleveland Browns have the potential to be strong contenders in 2024, but their chances of making their first-ever Super Bowl appearance could significantly improve if quarterback Deshaun Watson is open to a minor concession.

Given Watson’s limited availability and relatively mediocre performance over the past two seasons, his $230 million fully-guaranteed deal is arguably one of the worst in the NFL. This is largely due to how it constrains the front office’s ability to bolster the team with talent, especially over the next three years, when his annual salary cap hit will be close to $64 million.

Recently, Watson publicly encouraged Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins to join him in Cleveland, emphasizing the team’s plan to throw the football more in 2024 and highlighting the Clemson connection he shares with Higgins.

However, the Browns currently face a challenging financial situation, being $20.5 million in the red. Barry Shuck of SB Nation’s Dawgs By Nature pointed out the financial constraints and suggested that Watson might need to renegotiate his contract, accepting a reduced salary, if he is keen on having Higgins join the team.

Watson made a pitch to Higgins on his podcast “QB Unplugged” on January 26, stating, “You know what’s up with us, man. We want to pass the ball and are going to pass it a lot. We are going to take care of you. The Cleveland fans will love you to death, and we have the Clemson ties. We didn’t get to play with each other, but this is our opportunity. Come on over to The Land.”
