How does the Rams’ former assistant head coach, Jimmy Lake, taking on the role of defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons impact the Rams?

The Los Angeles Rams have experienced a significant coaching shakeup this offseason, particularly with three of head coach Sean McVay’s assistants making their way to the Atlanta Falcons.

On January 25, the Falcons secured Raheem Morris, who had served as the Rams’ defensive coordinator for the past three seasons, as their new head coach.

In the subsequent days, Morris recruited two more Rams assistants for key roles on his coaching staff – Zac Robinson, the quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator, as his offensive coordinator, and Jimmy Lake, the assistant head coach, as his defensive coordinator.

While Morris and Robinson had well-defined roles in Los Angeles, the departure of Jimmy Lake raises questions about its impact on the Rams. Sean McVay had previously emphasized Lake’s significance within the coaching structure, highlighting his leadership and experience as integral factors, even though he wasn’t officially the right-hand man.

On March 10, McVay spoke extensively about Lake’s role, praising his great overall perspective, especially in defensive areas. McVay emphasized the value Lake brought in terms of leadership and his ability to provide insights across both offense and defense, making his departure a notable loss for the Rams.

“Having Jimmy in the building has been a positive experience. Throughout the season, he had opportunities to address the team, delivering messages and presentations, highlighting his leadership role in Los Angeles.

At 47 years old, Lake played a crucial role in the development of second-year cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Derion Kendrick, and he played a key part in integrating Ahkello Witherspoon into a significant role, even as a late addition.

Whether on or off the field, Lake’s impact, though not always visible in the public eye, was strongly felt within the Rams’ facilities.

Expressing his confidence in Lake, McVay stated, “I think the leadership experiences he has had will be beneficial. The assistant head coach role reflects my respect for Jimmy and his involvement on both sides of the football.”
