In their bid to remain competitive next season, the Cleveland Browns need to restructure their finances, likely involving the release of several contributing players. Joe Tansey from Bleacher Report highlighted three salaries that the team would benefit from cutting in the upcoming months, with defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo topping the list.

Next season, the Browns have a little over $30 million allocated to Myles Garrett, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo. Of these contracts, Okoronkwo’s is the most feasible to part ways with during the offseason, as it is the least expensive among the three.

Having joined from the Houston Texans last offseason, the defensive end had a commendable performance alongside Garrett, securing 4.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and eight quarterback hits.

While Okoronkwo would be a valuable asset for a second season, the Browns might need to consider releasing him as a salary cap measure if they are unable to renegotiate other contracts to meet financial compliance. This decision could be influenced by the substantial financial commitment tied to Deshaun Watson’s contract, potentially necessitating unpopular budget cuts.

Last offseason, Okoronkwo inked a three-year, $19 million contract to join the Browns, with a modest $4.1 million salary cap hit for the 2024 season. However, the predicament arises from Deshaun Watson’s substantial $230 million contract, which casts bargains like Okoronkwo as potential casualties due to its imposing $64 million cap hit for each of the next three seasons.

If the Browns opt to part ways with Okoronkwo, whether through a cut or a trade, they are required to wait until after June 1 to execute the move. Taking such action before that date incurs negative financial implications, according to Over The Cap.
