San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado has the chance to showcase his skills at third base during Spring Training, although manager Mike Shildt is refraining from specifying a timeline for his return to the hot corner.

Shildt emphasized that Machado has the opportunity to start the season at third base and is expected to get some playing time at that position during spring training. However, Shildt remains cautious about setting a definitive timeframe.

Machado underwent surgery to repair his right extensor tendon two days after the conclusion of the 2023 regular season, addressing a long-standing issue with tennis elbow that had been bothering him since 2022.

While Shildt notes that Machado has made more progress in hitting than fielding at this point, he remains open to possibilities and isn’t ruling out anything for Machado’s participation on Opening Day.

“Our medical team and assistant hitting coach, Mike McCoy, have monitored him in San Diego, and Manny is excelling in his offseason regimen. He has been actively participating in batting practice. I can confirm that he is on track to be prepared offensively, and his recovery with throwing is progressing well.

However, we understand that there’s no need to rush him onto the field at third base during the early stages of spring training or the initial exhibition game. He is positioned well to be ready for the start of the season.”
