In their fourth spring training match, the San Diego Padres took on the Chicago Cubs. The Padres secured their inaugural victory of the 2024 season by shutting out the Cubs with a score of 7-0.

The Padres exhibited stellar baseball performance, with outfielder Jose Azocar playing a pivotal role in driving his team to success. Azocar’s home run in the fourth inning significantly extended their lead to 4-0.

Snell is coming off a standout season with the Padres, boasting impressive statistics including a 2.25 ERA, 182 ERA+, 3.44 FIP, 1.18 WHIP, and a career-best 234 strikeouts. Despite his remarkable performance, he finds himself as a free agent.

So far, there hasn’t been significant pursuit of Snell by any team, with the New York Yankees being the only reported offer. With the start of the season approaching in less than a month, there’s speculation whether Snell might consider returning to the team where he enjoyed considerable success in recent seasons.

If Snell opts to return to San Diego, he may need to accept a lower financial offer than expected. Alternatively, he could opt for a contract structure akin to Cody Bellinger’s recent deal – shorter term with a higher average annual value – possibly allowing him to re-enter the market in a more favorable climate for free agents next year.

The clock is ticking for Snell to make a decision on his 2024 season destination. Perhaps the Padres could make a late, unexpected effort to re-sign their star pitcher.
