NFL Insider Provides Clue Regarding Baker Mayfield’s Free Agency Intentions.

Despite the Tampa Bay Buccaneers securing an offensive coordinator with input from quarterback Baker Mayfield, there is still a possibility of losing the Pro Bowl offensive MVP.

SiriusXM NFL Radio co-host Amber Theoharis, who had a private conversation with Mayfield at the Pro Bowl, expressed confidence that Mayfield is keen on discovering his true market value in free agency, as reported by JoeBucsFan.com on February 3.

This revelation came a day after the Buccaneers appointed Liam Coen as the offensive coordinator, a coach Mayfield previously worked with during a brief stint with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022.

JoeBucsFan.com expressed doubt that the Buccaneers would allow Mayfield to leave in free agency, speculating that Mayfield might be interested in pushing the team to use the franchise tag on him, preventing him from entering free agency. The franchise tag, theoretically, would set Mayfield’s negotiating starting point at $35 million per season, which is the anticipated salary for tagged quarterbacks in 2024.

According to Spotrac, Mayfield is estimated to have an average annual salary of $27.1 million or a potential 4-year contract totaling $108.5 million. Notably, in 2023, he played under a 1-year, $4 million deal with the Buccaneers, following a series of transitions in 2022 that saw him move between three different teams.
