In contemplating the hypothetical Mount Rushmore of Houston Sports Athletes, it’s highly probable that Jose Altuve would secure a spot on that esteemed list. His numerous accolades speak for themselves and need little elaboration here. However, Altuve transcends mere athletic achievements; his impact on the community extends far beyond the baseball diamond. This influence was further underscored by Altuve’s recent signing of a 5-year, $125 million extension.

If Altuve’s contract unfolds as anticipated, he’ll be poised to achieve a remarkable feat for a Houston sports superstar: remaining with a single team/organization throughout his entire career. Reflecting on the history of prominent Houston professional athletes, it becomes evident how few have stayed loyal to a Houston-based organization from start to finish, particularly those considered for the esteemed Houston Sports Mount Rushmore. Excluding individual sports athletes like Carl Lewis or Simone Biles, the instances of Houston pros beginning and concluding their careers with Houston-based organizations are scarce.

Even the most celebrated NFL stars from Houston did not achieve this milestone. Earl Campbell and Warren Moon, arguably among the greatest Houston Oilers, concluded their careers donning different team uniforms. Moon played for Minnesota, Seattle, and Kansas City before retiring, disregarding his CFL tenure for the sake of this discussion.

Similarly, Earl Campbell endured a final season with New Orleans after an illustrious tenure in Houston. Despite their monumental contributions, franchise icons like JJ Watt and the newest inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Andre Johnson, did not enjoy full careers with the Texans. Watt ventured to Arizona for his final two seasons, while Johnson concluded his career with stints in Indianapolis and Tennessee.
